A search on the open www, shows that there are kits available to build your own ham radio base station. Is there a "better" kit, and what experiences would you care to share?

I am interested in building my own radio if it is still considered posible today…in this instant visa card / throw away society we have contsructed. I think this may be interesting for both myself and my son, neither of which are electricians or any good at soldering yet!

Spare cash, I think may be better spent on a good truck radio (mobile) and playing with a kit at home may be a way to learn much more of this interesting hobby.

Thanks for your input,

Greg

Hi Greg. Have you tried some of the very simple SDR's.

Here are two links:

Unfortunely, the use surface mounted components.

73 and GL.

Look into Vectronics – they have kits from starting to solder – all the way to more difficult units. If you really want to get technical – look into the K-2 and K-3 kits from Elecraft.
